Job Description
Our client is a large independent media company, and they are looking for an energetic, highly organized Assistant Copy Editor to support the production of assorted educational materials. This position is primarily responsible for preparing written material for publication by performing the following duties personally. This position reports up to the Senior Copy Editor.
Key Roles / Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
- Prioritizes, tracks, handles, and maintains records of the elements, costs, and time schedules of multiple projects.
- Consults with client or supervisor to evaluate individual project needs.
- Reads copy to detect errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
- Verifies facts, dates, and statistics.
- Rewrites or modifies copy to clarify meaning and to conform to publication's style and editorial policy.
- Writes or rewrites headlines and captions according to publication requirements.
- Confers with author regarding changes made to copy.
- Marks copy for typesetter, using standardized code to indicate how type should be set
- Reads galley and page proofs to detect errors, and uses standardized code to indicate corrections.
- Initiates or replies to correspondence regarding material published or being considered for publication.
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in proofreading and copy editing a variety of materials (books, brochures, educational material, magazines, newsletters, web content, and electronic publications), in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented print publishing environment.
Must possess working knowledge and application of The Chicago Manual of Style.
Must be detail oriented and able to easily coordinate multiple projects.
Knowledge of print production process highly desirable; digital production knowledge a plus.
Experience: Minimum 2-3 years
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or communication required. Knowledge of Christian publishing (or a desire to quickly learn) a plus.
Technical requirements
- Proficiency in Adobe InCopy and MS Word are an absolute must for consideration
- Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign
- Knowledge or experience of K4 is a plus, but not required
